A national photographers’ organization has filed a complaint about Miami-Dade Police’s actions after officers arrested one of its members during the Occupy Miami eviction near the Stephen P. Clark Government Center.

Local freelance photographer Carlos Miller, who has been arrested before for disobeying police orders, was charged with resisting arrest without violence after police said he refused to comply with orders to disperse and leave the area.

Though several members of the local media were covering the police action on the night of Jan. 31, Miller, 43, was the only person Miami-Dade police arrested.

Miller runs the blog, Photography Is Not A Crime, which documents confrontations between law enforcement and photographers. He later claimed that some of the film from his camera was missing.

“I looked through the footage and I saw my video was not there. They destroyed evidence.’’

He said he was later able to recover the footage from his internal hard drive days later and posted it on his website.

Meanwhile, the National Press Photographers Association sent a letter to Miami-Dade Police voicing their concern about the arrest.

“This is something I deal with on a daily basis around the country,” said Mickey H. Osterreicher, general counsel for the photographers association. “The most important thing is to have the charges dismissed.”

Major Nancy Perez, who ordered Miller’s arrest, would not discuss the incident..

“I will not comment until after the investigation has been completed, to maintain fairness,” she said.

Miller has been arrested several times before. He also has a series of videos of himself posted on YouTube where he goes into federal buildings, airports and other locations, with a video camera. When he is questioned, he films what generally turns into a confrontation.

On the night of the Occupy Miami eviction, the scene was chaotic. Aside from journalists covering the event, there was a live Internet stream of officers clearing the campers and bystanders recording the action on their own cameras and phones.

Even with the confusion, only a handful of people were arrested by night’s end. Six protesters, initially intent on going to jail, decided to walk away after police gave them one last chance to change their minds.

“They did not personally tell me to leave, they told everybody to leave,” said Miller.

From the tapes, Miller had at least two interactions with law enforcement. He is seen questioning why law enforcement would not allow him to film on a sidewalk that has been cleared. He asked police, “I can’t be in the park. Can I be on the sidewalk?” When told no, he responds with “why can’t I be on the sidewalk?”

An activist comes over and questions the officer’s actions.

Miller also attempted to film an activist’s arrest and claimed an officer was blocking his shot.

He is heard shouting at the officer “Goddamn, why the f— did you have to block the shot?”

Miller has blogged about his latest arrest and spoken to at least one news show.

“They have their side, I have my side,” he said.

OVER the last 15 years, the ground-breaking Old Trafford News has trained hundreds of people in photography, writing and publishing skills, while providing a trusted independent source of information for 12,000 homes in one of the most diverse communities in Greater Manchester.

It has gone from being a photocopied freesheet to a glossy, full-colour magazine; and this week will see the launch of OT News Online, a website created by and for a community that is amongst the ten per cent most deprived in the country.

So what is different about the OT News that has seen it thrive as other more traditional media struggle?

Editor and regular Guardian contributor Ally Fogg says that he sees the magazine’s training role as key to its survival.

The OT News has two distinct purposes. While the first is to produce a magazine that will inform, entertain, and inspire people to get involved, the second is to provide volunteer opportunities and training to those who may otherwise be excluded.

The two feed into each other; that is what makes us successful.

In July 2007, the magazine received £125,000 from the Big Lottery Reaching Communities fund, enabling staff to offer free training in journalism, photography and design, as well as one-to-one support and placement opportunities.

By placing production in the hands of a team of trained local volunteers, connections with the community were strengthened.

Lottery objectives included a five per cent increase in participation; the actual increase was more than 15 per cent. One article about a cooking class saw attendance leap by 77 per cent. Fogg says:

Although funding bodies are understandably reluctant to pay for the publication of a magazine, they will fund the training of those who contribute to it’s pages.

And with just 16 people from Salford given jobs at the BBC‘s northern Media City headquarters, Fogg says there is more need than ever for an “alternative stepping stone.”

Illustrator Imaan Williams, 23, has finally made it to the hallowed ground of Media City after using her OT News experience to apply successfully for a master’s degree in animation at Salford University. Williams graduated from Liverpool John Moores University in May 2010 with a BA in graphic arts and animation, but found herself unable to progress.

Last year she started volunteering at OT News, creating the the magazine’s comic strip. Soon other organisations started noticing her work; she was commissioned to design a flyer for Trafford Volunteer Week.

When I finished university I didn’t have any professional experience. I set up a blog, and put all my voluntary work on there. They were were really impressed at the Salford interview because I had a professional portfolio. It’s also given me the confidence to work with others.

The OT News is based at the local St John’s Community Centre, which they currently use for free. Each edition costs £3,000 to produce and deliver, and is paid for by the sale of advertising space, which costs around £400 per page.

Community organisations and the council also pay for ‘sponsored features’, where a subject is guaranteed coverage. But, Fogg insists, this does not compromise the magazine’s ability to scrutinise and criticise.

We can say what we want. The worst that can happen is that we lose an advert. Because we are not dependent on one single funder, we are not in the pocket of any particular organisation.

The 15th anniversary is seeing the magazine focus on a new mixed model of funding. They have set up a charitable social enterprise, OT Media Plus, to help support other fledgling community media groups. Fogg says:

We are passionate about our model of community journalism as an agent for change. We honestly believe we are setting a new standard in hyperlocal media here in Old Trafford that could be seen as a model to communities across the country.

As one of the most successful franchises in American pop culture history, The Transformers have already passed their 25th year in the public eye. Based on Hasbro’s toy line of the same name (which, in turn, was based on a Japanese toy line by Takara), their success established a strong connection between animation and marketing for younger audiences. Case in point: Hasbro’s own G.I. Joe was relaunched in 1982—just two years prior to The Transformers—and after an FCC regulation was dropped in 1984 (which prohibited companies from broadcasting product-based animated shows), all bets were off. The swift success of The Transformers that year was also due to a Marvel Comics line based on the toys, which led to an avalanche of sales, spin-offs…and, of course, the infamous 1986 motion picture. In short, you’d be hard-pressed to find a thirty-something not familiar with the franchise.

I’ll admit that I’m only familiar with the original animated series (also known as “G1″), the animated movie and the recent Michael Bay crapfests, so my limited Transformers knowledge doesn’t extend to Beast Wars, Transformers Animated and the like. As such, my ears didn’t immediately perk up when Transformers Prime was announced a few years back, but this ambitious CGI series quickly won me over with a mixture of fun writing, great characters, excellent voice-acting and a healthy dose of action. If that weren’t enough, it’s obvious that most of the creative team obviously grew up as huge fans of G1 in the 1980s, since a number of faithful little details has been sprinkled in to keep nostalgic fans happy. These may be just sound effects, catch-phrases and familiar voices, but every little bit helps.

The core plot of Transformers is about as predictable as your average Mario game: it’s still Autobots vs. Decepticons, battling for control of the Earth and its valuable energy resources. The stripped-down roster of Autobots is limited to Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen!), Rachet (Jeffrey Combs), Arcee (Sumalee Montano), Bulkhead (Kevin Michael Richardson) and Bumblebee . The dastardly Decepticons are still fronted by Megatron (Frank Welker!) and include Soundwave, Starscream (Steve Blum), Knockout (Adam Baldwin!), Airachnid (Gina Torres!) and Knockout (Daran Norris). Humans are also part of the picture, and this time around it’s a trio of t(w)eens: Jack (Josh Keaton, the reluctant hero), Miko (Tania Gunadi, the quirky Asian girl) and Raphael Esquivel (Andy Pessoa, the *sigh* pint-sized computer whiz), as well as Special Agent William Fowler (Ernie Hudson!), who serves as the Autobots’ government liaison.

Any way you slice it, Transformers Prime is obviously a bit more ambitious and sophisticated than your average cartoon: the visuals are fantastic and even the sound design aims for a theatrical experience. I’ll admit that some of the character design details are a bit lacking, such as magically moving robot mouths and an oversimplified look for the humans (who, at times, look like Wii characters trapped in an XBOX 360 game). There’s also a certain corniness to the dialogue that’s practically expected with three young teens in the picture, but it’s forgivable and easy to ignore. It all boils down to story and atmosphere, and it’s here where Prime really shines: the series was nominated for multiple daytime Emmys and walked off with two during this first 26-episode season…and though it’s obviously intended to be a kids’ show that parents can enjoy, Transformers fans of all ages should have no trouble appreciating what Prime brings to the table. Season 2 already premiered a few weeks ago, but it’s not too late to catch up.

Presented on Blu-Ray as a Limited Edition (for now) and also available on DVD, Transformers Prime: Season One arrives courtesy of Shout Factory. The former obviously bumps up the A/V quality a few notches and includes a bonus comic for good measure. Whether that’s worth paying twice as much is somewhat debatable, but this is still a solid high-def package that the whole family can enjoy.

Video & Audio Quality

Presented in its original 1.78:1 aspect ratio, this 1080p transfer of Transformers Prime: Season One is excellent but not perfect. To be fair, a few small problems are inherently due to the source material, including mild aliasing and jagged edges. Mild compression artifacts can also been spotted along the way, which seems like more of an authoring issue than anything else. Either way, what’s here is largely impressive, as the image is typically razor sharp with vivid, striking colors and strong black levels. So while there’s room for improvement, I’d imagine that most fans of Prime will be pleased.

The audio is a touch more consistent, as each episode arrives with your choice of DTS-HD 5.1 or LPCM 2.0 mixes. The former creates an enveloping and dynamic soundstage from start to finish, often filled with plenty of surround activity once the action heats up. A bit more low end would’ve helped to sell some of the action, as well as some added “punch” for the gunfire. Dialogue is crisp and the score is also well-represented with no obvious sync issues. Overall, fans won’t find much to complain about here, as this ambitious audio presentation is leaps and bounds above most animated TV shows.

Packaging, Presentation & Menu Design

Seen above, this four-disc “Limited Edition” set is housed in a multi-hubbed keepcase, paired with a bonus comic book (see below) that fits inside a sturdy outer slipcover. It’s an attractive and practical design overall, but a little taller than your average Blu-Ray packaging due to the book. The menu designs are smooth and easy to navigate, though an endless sea of commercials must be skipped beforehand. Each 22-minute episode has been divided into less than a half-dozen chapters, no obvious layer changes were detected and this Blu-Ray appears to be locked for Region “A” players only.

Bonus Features

Unlike the show itself, almost all of these bonus features seem to be aimed directly at older fans. The bulk of these are 14 Audio Commentaries that largely focus on episodes from Discs 1 and 4; more often than not, they do an excellent job of covering all the bases. Featured participants include several producers, a number of representatives from Hasbro, animation and art directors, composer Brian Tyler, several directors and writers, a handful of voice actors (including Peter Cullen and Ernie Hudson) and…Bumblebee, just to name a few. These are generally fun and informative audio commentaries… which is good news, because the remaining bonus features don’t dig quite as deep.

Disc 4 houses the remaining extras, which lead off with a promotional Behind-the-Scenes Featurette (11:03). It’s short and not especially enlightening, though I enjoyed seeing a handful of voice actors do their thing. Also here is a slightly more in-depth Toy Featurette that focuses on Prime‘s characters and how they selected the roster (16:30), as well as a ridiculously short Teaser for Season 2 (0:20). Like the episodes, these bonus features are presented in 1080p and do not include optional subtitles.

Also included in this “Limited Edition” package is a softcover Graphic Novel that serves as a Prime prequel of sorts. It’s a nice little bonus and quite substantial at 96 pages, but I’m assuming that later releases of this boxed set will omit the book (although I’m guessing it’ll still be available separately).

I don’t know if I was fully prepared to like Transformers Prime, but it’s a fun series with great visuals, familiar characters, terrific voice acting and a not-too-serious tone. This is a substantial improvement over the Michael Bay movies…and dare I say, probably the most enjoyable Transformers I’ve seen yet. Though Prime is aimed at the younger crowd, I’d imagine that G1 fans should enjoy themselves too. Shout Factory pairs a decent A/V presentation with a nice mix of extras, which makes Transformers Prime: Season One worth a look. Recommended, but the DVD carries a more reasonable price tag.

NOTE: The above images were obtained from promotional outlets and do not represent Blu-Ray’s native 1080p resolution.

Even though I have a full-time job working for a small telephone company, I also do some freelance writing on the side both as a hobby and to earn some extra income. I’ve never earned enough to do it full-time. But, I do typically earn enough to have to declare it on my income taxes each year.

I have done that every year since I started writing with the exception of one, 2009. This wasn’t something that was intentional. I just somehow forgot to enter in that income when I was filing my taxes online (I think my kids might have distracted me).

In fact, I didn’t even realize I did this until December of 2010 when, two weeks before Christmas, I received a letter from the Internal Revenue Service saying I had been caught underreporting my income and owed a little over $1,000 in taxes plus penalties and interest.

I know there are plenty of other people out there that have had this happen to them. But, I’m not ashamed to admit this scared me. The letter wasn’t overly threatening. But this occurred several months after I had received my tax refund. The money had already been spent, and I didn’t have that kind of money just lying around the house and Christmas was just around the corner. I obviously wasn’t going to be able to pay it by the due date and didn’t know if that meant I would see my wages garnished or if the police would be at my door the next day to arrest me for tax fraud.

It is now a little more than a year later and I’m happy to say I survived unscathed thanks both to me keeping a cool head and to the IRS itself.

I didn’t want to spend the holidays worrying and, since the letter gave me to the middle of January to respond, I decided not to do anything with it until after Christmas. The following Monday, I reluctantly dialed the phone number for the IRS and, to my surprise, actually got a friendly voice. The person on the other end explained the process to me and helped me set up a reasonable payment plan that fit my budget. I was even allowed to set up my own monthly due date.

I originally wanted to pay off the amount owed over the course of a few months and set a high monthly payment. However, after about three months, this didn’t fit my budget as well as I thought it would and I ended up calling the IRS again. When I called, I was afraid they would tell me I couldn’t change my payment. But, instead, I was able to reduce it by half with the understanding that I would pay a bit more in interest since it would take longer to pay off.

As a result of their help and, most importantly, me making that first call, my past due taxes are now paid in full. I can now live my life without having to worry about owing our government money. And, thanks to this hard lesson, I’m a lot more careful when I file my taxes.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) February 23, 2012

A new public relations business, based in Pittsburgh, launched today. Heather Holtschlag Public Relations specializes in providing freelance writing and public relations support to the health, wellness and fitness industries.

“I have nearly 20 years of experience in the healthcare public relations field, working in a wide array of areas, including writing, editing, media relations, and special event planning,” Holtschlag said. “My passion for these areas stems from college courses and internships I enrolled in and fueled my career working as a public relations specialist for major medical centers both in Pittsburgh and Atlanta.”

Holtschlag has a wide array of skills and areas of expertise that she put to use during the course of her career. While working in the marketing department at Magee-Women’s Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh, Holtschlag served as the primary media spokesperson for the family of the city’s first set of sextuplets, who received local, regional and national press coverage. In addition, she coordinated media interest in the opening of the hospital’s new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Holtschlag also served as part of a two-person team to coordinate the publicity surrounding the opening of the country’s first robotic operating room at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. On a smaller, but just as important, scale, Holtschlag has proactively pitched stories to appropriate media, responded to media inquiries, served as an on call representative for the media, and coordinated media interviews.

“My main goal with media relations activities is to strategize with the client on the best angle for the story – the angle that is going to get the most amount of attention,” Holtschlag noted.

In addition to her media relations campaign management, Holtschlag has extensive experience writing and editing numerous marketing materials, including patient, consumer, and physician-to-physician newsletters, patient and consumer brochures, and website content.

“I enjoy working with clients on marketing strategies that are going to work,” Holtschlag said. “Whether it is a simple monthly newsletter or a more complex, intricate marketing brochure, I want to know that my clients are going to be pleased with the outcomes.”

Holtschlag also works with medical professionals to promote their research efforts, including the acceptance of studies into major medical journals, and clinical trials in which they are involved.

“Healthcare professionals often become so busy in their work, that they don’t think to promote it to the general public, and as a result, they may miss out on a great media opportunity,” Holtschlag explained. “Promotion of studies and trials not only adds to their credibility, but it also enables them to promote one more facet of their work to current and potential patients as well as colleagues.”

Holtschlag also works with wellness and fitness facilities to promote member success stories.

“The member who followed through on their New Year’s Resolution to quit smoking or lose 80 pounds with the assistance of that wellness or fitness facility is a great opportunity to highlight that facility, whether through a local media story or a member profile on the company’s website or in a newsletter,” Holtschlag said.

For more information about the services that Holtschlag provides, or to see samples of her work, visit her website at http://www.heatherholtschlagpr.weebly.com, or contact her by phone at (412) 378-6056.
